What is a denture?
A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and adjacent tissues. It is made of acrylic resin, sometimes in combination with various metals. Complete dentures replace all the teeth, while a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position.
Who needs a denture?
Candidates for complete dentures have lost most or all of their teeth. A partial denture is suitable for those who are not candidates for implants and who have some natural teeth remaining. A denture improves chewing ability and speech and provides support for facial muscles. It will greatly enhance the facial appearance and smile.
Is there another choice to a denture?
There are alternatives to dentures. Dentures are no longer the only way to restore a mouth that has little or no non-restorable teeth. Strategically placed implants can now be used to support permanently cemented bridges, eliminating the need for a denture. The cost tends to be greater, but the implants and bridges more closely resemble the "feel" of real teeth. Dental implants are the alternative of choice to dentures, but not everyone is a candidate for implants.
Smiles & Sonrisas offers new hope to patients frustrated with dentures. Mini Implants, an exciting procedure, will secure existing dentures without the use of messy adhesives. The typical Mini Implant procedure can be completed in a single, virtually pain-free visit, with the patient eating happily like never before within several hours.
Mini Implants are small screws that are placed below the gum line and into the bone, providing an instant anchor for full and partial dentures. The denture is often modified with rubber stops that slide over and lock on the protruding heads of the implants. With Mini Implants the denture can easily be taken in and out for cleaning but stays in place securely for as long as necessary. Mini Implants cost a fraction of traditional implants. They are the perfect option for patients with dentures who cannot go through the expense required for traditional implants.
Even patients with some bone loss can benefit from Mini Implants. In one simple procedure, we can eliminate all of the discomforts of dentures, like the need for messy adhesives and constant adjustments.
